Brushing your teeth is one of the most important habits to maintain for a healthy mouth. It removes plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth, preventing cavities, gum disease, and other health issues. If done correctly, brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time can help you maintain excellent oral health.
The type of toothbrush you choose can have a significant impact on your oral health. While manual toothbrushes are effective in removing plaque, electric brushes are often recommended by dentists for their added benefits. An electric brush can move more easily along the gum line and between teeth for a complete clean. Electric toothbrushes are also more effective in cleaning around braces or orthodontic appliances.
The size and shape of a toothbrush play a significant role in determining its effectiveness. A toothbrush should have a small head that can get into the crevices of your teeth while also being comfortable to hold and manipulate. Many electric toothbrushes come with a variety of interchangeable heads. By swapping out the head on your electric brush each month, you can rest assured that your toothbrush is fresh and effective every month.
Patients are also encouraged to choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hard-bristled bristles can cause irritation of the gums and may wear away gum tissue over time. Choose a soft-bristled brush with rounded tips for the best results.
When choosing a toothbrush, keep in mind that all products are not created equal. Toothbrushes made with the American Dental Association’s seal of approval are screened for effectiveness and durability. Look for the seal when selecting a new toothbrush, and know that it will provide you with the high-quality care you need to achieve a healthy smile.
Make sure you brush your teeth for at least two minutes. This is how long it takes to effectively remove plaque from your teeth. When using an electric toothbrush, make sure it’s set to the two-minute interval, so you don’t accidentally under-clean your teeth.
Don’t neglect your tongue when brushing. Your tongue is home to bacteria that can cause bad breath and other oral health issues. Make sure to brush the surface of your tongue every time you brush your teeth to keep it clean and free from harmful bacteria.
Consider flossing once a day as well. Flossing can help eliminate additional plaque buildup between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach on its own. So remember to toss a stick of floss into your bag so you can clean between your teeth anytime throughout the day!
Dentists recommend brushing your teeth with a circular motion and for the toothbrush to reach every surface of your teeth. This helps clean them better. When brushing, place a small amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush. This will help ensure all of your teeth get the protection they need. Then move the brush in small circles to gently brush your teeth. The head should be moving in a back-and-forth motion. Make sure to brush the front, back, and top of your teeth. Pay special attention to the gum line, as plaque tends to accumulate here. Then move on to chewing surfaces. You can use small circular strokes to clean these as well. Finish by placing the bristles of your toothbrush on the insides of your teeth and gently scrub your cheeks to remove food and bacteria.
If you take good care of your oral health by practicing good dental care habits at home, you’ll greatly reduce your risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Regular visits to your dentist for professional cleanings and exams are also an important part of maintaining your oral health. Call your dentist to schedule a consultation to learn more today!
